Which bulb is the best, LED or CFL? It's one of those debates that has strong believers on both sides of the argument.
Both are energy efficient options to the common light bulb but which one is the best bulb? Well, that depends on your needs. Here's a breakdown of each option and you can decide which bulb is the best:
Advantages: LED bulbs last much longer than CFL bulbs (25,000 hours vs 8,000 hours) and consume up to 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs. This means that outfitting your home or office with LED bulbs will not only cut costs off of the energy bills but it will also be a lower maintenance cost as they bulbs will not need to be changed as much.
Disadvantages: While LED bulbs last longer, you will be paying for that. They normally go for much more than a CFL bulb though advances in technology and manufacturing are closing the gap. These lights are also used for directional light which means they're better as overhead or under cabinet lights rather than desktop lamp bulbs.
Advantages: Basically a smaller version of a standard fluorescent bulb, CFL bulbs do not have that bright, white light that is normally seen at a hospital or office building. It's more suited for a home as they can fit into standard light sockets which means they can be used throughout the house or building.
Disadvantages: CFL bulbs still contain mercury which is one of the most known downsides of these bulbs. Because of this and the lower lifetime of the bulb, disposing of these bulbs can become an issue.
